Eat Local America! Kicks Off at Eastside Food Co-op on Saturday, August 1 - Picnic in the Parking Lot

Eastside Food Co-op, along with other Twin Cities area natural food co-ops, is planning to celebrate a bountiful harvest and the producers who make it all possible later this year.

The Challenge: We're challenging our customers and owners to make a concerted - and fun - effort to eat local food during the entire month of August as part of a national initiative called Eat Local, America! Come in to the store and sign up to eat 80% of your diet from locally-sourced ingredients.

The Events:

Local Foods Picnic in the Parking Lot
Saturday, August 1
3-7 p.m.
Kick off with dinner, including local brats, barbecued chicken drumsticks, vegan baked beans, corn on the cob, local watermelon, and iced tea or water -- all for $7.99!
4-5 p.m. Watermelon Seed Spitting Contest!
5-7 p.m. Sample locally made beers and wines from Central Avenue Liquor!

Samplin' Saturday - Local Foods
Saturday, August 8
11 a.m. - 3 p.m. in the store

Local Foods Potluck
Saturday, August 22
5-7 p.m. in Suite A (former Granite Studio)

Eat Out with Local Foods
every Wednesday in August
Tired of cooking locally at home? Here's the answer: Eat Out Local - sign up to eat out with other Localvores at one of four NE Restaurants specializing in local cuisine. Meet at the local restaurant of your choice at 6:30 p.m. Attend just one or all of the Wednesdays.
Sen Yai Sen Lek
Brasa
Red Stag Supper Club
Barley John's Brew Pub

Other activities are happening at the other Twin Cities Food Co-ops.

Get ready to Eat Local, America!

Eastside's 2nd Annual CSA Fair is tomorrow -- it's Samplin' Saturday too!

CSA Fair
Saturday, April 11
11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

It's time to think about Community Supported Agriculture, or CSAs! Consumers purchase a CSA share, which buys them a box of produce every week throughout the growing season.

Some of the CSAs to be represented at Eastside's fair include:
Blackberry Community Farm
Burning River Farm
Celestial Harvest Farm
Driftless Organics Farm
Goats & Gardens
Featherstone Farm
Riverbend Farm
Turnip Rock Farm
Don't see "your" farm? Drop Jean in produce a call and see if there's a drop-off planned for Eastside.

Some farms offer half shares. The co-op will have a bulletin board available for people looking to split shares, but all financial and share dividing specifics are between consumers and the farmers. Eastside's role is to provide refrigerated storage for the dropped-off produce.

If you're unable to attend the fair, there will be information available in the store, and you can contact the farms directly.

Northeast Community Education is partnering with Eastside Food Co-op, offering two new classes just in time for the Holidays!

Meatless Family Meals
Thursday, October 30

Vegetarian is not boring - it's fun and delicious. Learn how to provide your family with healthy non-meat meals using local and organic foods. Experienced vegetarians and staff from the co-op will explain why many people chose this eating path and show you how to cook up a storm - sans meat. Menus will be provided, prepared and of course sampled at the end of the evening. $15

Holidays: Shop & Eat Locally
Thursday, November 20
6:30-8:00 p.m.
Celebrate the holidays organically. Give the gift of putting dollars back into your community. Learn the good reasons to shop and eat locally over the holiday season. Staff from the co-op will teach you how to prepare snacks and meals for the holidays - no matter which Holiday(s) you celebrate. $15
